101 Things in 1001 Days

Edited: Since constantly updating this would keep refreshing it for people’s RSS feeds, click the 101 Things tab above to see my progress, or check the 101 Things category for any post where I get to cross-off a task!

So. I’ve been pondering this for awhile now. I’ve seen the 101 Things in 1001 Days going around, and I decided that it might be a good thing for me to do. The following gives a description of the project straight from the source, and my list follows. I had a hard time coming up with 101 reasonable, yet challenging goals. Some on the list are easier than others, but if I work, they could all be done. We’ll see! I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments, and I’ll try to keep you updated on my progress.

The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past – frequently simple goals such as New Year’s resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.

Some common goal setting tips:
1. Be decisive. Know exactly what you want, why you want it, and how you plan to achieve it.

2. Stay Focussed. Any goal requires sustained focus from beginning to end. Constantly evaluate your progress.

3. Welcome Failure. Frequently, very little is learned from a venture that did not experience failure in some form. Failure presents the opportunity to learn and makes the success more worthy.

4. Write down your goals. It clarifies your thinking and reinforces your commitment.

5. Keep your goals in sight. Review them frequently, and ensure that they are always at the forefront of your thinking.

  1. Good luck! I’ve considered doing this, but decided that I already schedule myself to do way too many things. ;)

I think you’ve already entered more than 33 counties’ worth of data at Markeroni (and then some!)

  2. I probably schedule myself to do too many things as well, but I thought it might be good for me. I think the real trick will be accepting tip #3 that they give: “Welcome Failure.” That’s not really in my nature, so it’ll be hard for me to let go of some of these if they don’t work out.

As for data entry, I think it’d be good for me to keep up at least one county/month!

Hey thanks for stopping by and wishing me luck! I am doing the same for you!

  4. Your professional goals are extremely ambitious – all the best with them! I like the way you have balanced them with goals such as “Thoroughly clean the toaster oven”. Personally, I think I’d manage to finish my PhD before that goals! Cheers.

  5. Hey Donna and Café Chick! Thanks for good wishes!

My toaster oven needs some serious work. We’ve had it for five years, and it needs a thorough scrubbing. I’m not even sure it can be done as well as I’d like, but I’m going to have to try!

  6. Looks like you have a good list going here. Good luck!

  7. Great list! Good luck!
