FFA Creativity: Flight

Helicopter

Here’s my down-to-the-wire entry for this week’s Free-For-All Creativity meme. The theme this week is “flight,” and since I’ve had quite a busy week, it seems appropriate. My last-minute entry is a remote-control helicopter that Logan got for Christmas. Sadly, we crashed it once too much, so it keeps flying right back into the wall. We need to re-balance something or other.

Thursday Thirteen #3: Songs I’ve actually “purchased” from iTunes

Thursday Thirteen #3: Thirteen songs I’ve actually “purchased” from iTunes

We all have songs that we love and we won’t admit to. This week, I’ll share thirteen songs that I’ve “purchased” on iTunes. I have to use the quotes since I haven’t actually put any of my own money into iTunes, but through gift cards and some free credits and things, I’ve gotten a number of my guilty pleasure songs from iTunes. I hope you enjoy this, and if you see one you like too, you should come clean. :)

  1. Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia) - US3: “Funky, funky!” I forget where I first heard this song, but I remember listening to it on some car ride with my uncle. He’s always so cool, and knows so much about music. I love this song.
  2. Inside Out - Eve 6: High School Angst. I’m ashamed I know all the words. This is on my “Angry” playlist.
  3. Take On Me - a-ha: How can you not love this song? Seriously. You know you sing along to it too when no one’s listening.
  4. All I Want for Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey: I once bought a Mariah Carey CD, and a few years later, the used CD shop wouldn’t buy my copy - they already had too many. Still, I can’t help but love this song (and part of me is secretly glad I still have that CD). My friend in undergrad would sing this one, and I love the movie “Love Actually,” so this one is definitely a keeper.
  5. Downtown - Petula Clark: In grade school, the big thing to do on a Friday night was to go to the Roller Rink, put on your roller skates and have a good time. This was a song they often played, and whenever she said “downtown” you had to crouch. Classic. They also played “The Sign” by Ace of Base a lot. I haven’t bought that song though. Yet.
  6. Beware of the Boys (Mundian to Bach Ke) - Panjabi MC: Logan’s undergrad roomie played this song quite a lot, so it grew on us, and we had to get it a few years later (though it took us awhile to figure out what it was…)
  7. It’s Raining Men - The Weather Girls: I sing along to this. Every time. Hallelujah.
  8. U Can’t Touch This - MC Hammer: This song still makes me want to dance - even if I ocassionally slip into the lyrics of the Weird Al version, and I think about Family Guy when it’s time to do the bump. “That’s word because you know, you can’t touch this!”
  9. Ievan Polkka (Ieva’s Polka) - Loituma: Yes, it’s that song with the spinning leek. I couldn’t help myself. It’s so catchy - even if I can’t understand any of it.
  10. Informer - Snow: Yeah, the super-white reggae rapper from Toronto. I admit it. I still can’t sing along to the whole song though.
  11. Autobahn - Kraftwerk: This was a song that Logan’s family played at the beginning of some of their longer road trips. We had to get it to, but it was awfully hard to pick which version to buy. There are tons!
  12. Build Me Up Buttercup - The Foundations: We did this song in marching band once in high school. At one point in the routine, we got to sing and dance to a line or two. The french horn section (led by one of my best friends) made up a nice little routine to that line. Whenever we’re together (mostly just at weddings these days), we sing it at the top of our lungs and do the dance.
  13. Whip It - Devo: Really, there’s nothing to say for this one. Just whip it. It’s not too late.

Wow, thirteen came and went really quickly. I could keep going. What are your guilty pleasure songs?

Mr. Squirrel

The squirrels on our campus are known for being fat, complacent, and rather docile. They’ve been mistaken for small cats before, and we even have a “Michigan Squirrels” club that feeds them. Last year, we had a squirrel build a nest right outisde our office window. We would leave seeds and peanuts for him on the windowsill, and he happily lived outside. Over time, he disappeared, and so did his nest. However, he has returned! (Really - it’s the same squirrel. Yeah.) With nice weather yesterday, we decided to open the window, and Mr. Squirrel decided that he’d much rather find the whole bag of sunflower seeds inside the office than eat the few we put outside. When my co-worker and I came in, he ran back outside, but I guess we have to be a bit more careful when we want some air. He’s a brave guy, and he’ll come relatively close to me when I put out more seeds or am just standing there. When I pulled out the camera, he was a bit skittish at first - running away at the shutter. Eventually though, he let me take more photos, even with flash. So here he is. Happy Easter!

Happy Easter, everyone. It’s been quite the low-key holiday here this year. Anya (the dog) woke me up as she does every weekend to let her outside, and I ate the head of a chocolate turtle (from my mother-in-law) for breakfast. Hubby had a three-hour long meeting with his advisor today, so I spent the time at home watching movies and eating too much. The folks are in Florida this year, celebrating my grandpa’s 80th birthday and Easter. I’m sad I couldn’t be there (it was a surprise party, too!) but in our family’s true fashion there were poems and songs all celebrating the event. I even wrote a poem and made a little video to send along, so I guess I was there in spirit. Too bad spirits don’t get to eat cucumber dip or play sheepshead with the crew!

Anyway, the sun was beautiful today, just like yesterday. The 7.5" of snow we got on Friday night are almost gone, and the snowman hubby made yesterday is fading fast, too. He’s leaning over quite precariously today. I’ve been feeling a little antsy recently. Cabin fever perhaps? So, this afternoon I went to go fill up my bike tires to take a brief ride outside. Unfortunately, after I pumped up the tires, I realized I didn’t know where my helmet was, so I couldn’t go. It might be in my office, but I might have to go buy a new one if I can’t find it. Either way, my grand plans for a bike ride were foiled, so I’m still inside. I just hope that Friday’s snowstorm was the last of the season. As it is, it pushed us into the snowiest winter on record here. 85 inches.

That’s probably enough rambling for now. I hope everyone is enjoying the beginning of spring, even if the weather isn’t agreeing yet.

Free-For-All Creativity: Empty

Empty
This week’s FFA Creativity theme is empty. It seems quite appropriate, as I’m feeling particularly drained this week. I wasn’t quite sure how to put the sense of mental emptiness into a photo though, so I went with a more literal interpretation, and you have to project my state of mind on the photo. I like that you can see me in the glass in this photo. That makes it seem more appropriate somehow.

Thursday Thirteen #2: Games!

Thursday Thirteen #2: Thirteen Games in My Life.

I love games. So this week, you get a list of games/sports from my life, past and present.

  1. Sheepshead! In our family, Sheepshead is the quintessential game to play. At any family gathering, you’d better have some change to play with - for sheeps is serious business. It’s a rite of passage to finally be able to play at the table with the adults, and as a kid you always wanted to “help” the adults play.
  2. Soccer (Football): Like many American kids, I played soccer when I was little. My dad coached our team for awhile, and I was usually goalie or at least a defender. While I enjoyed it, I didn’t stick with it, and the whole having to run thing wasn’t really something I liked, so I quit in middle school.
  3. Softball: One season I joined a softball team. I wasn’t terribly good at it - played left field mostly. And again with the running!
  4. Chess: In high school, I joined the chess team. This probably had something to do with a certain other person who was on the chess team, but I liked it. I only played on the JV team, and while I wasn’t bad, I certainly wasn’t great either. I really loved it when there were 6th graders from other schools beating me. Our high school chess coach was a great guy, and hubby and I picked up some of his speech mannerisms. Fair enough.
  5. Tennis: I never played tennis in any official league or what not, but it was one of the sections in gym that I liked more than others, and I think I took lessons one summer, too. It takes a lot of practice for me to get a consistent overhead serve, but I enjoy it. These days, though, I’m more likely to play tennis on the Wii than on an actual court. I’m hoping to change that a bit this summer.
  6. Red Rover: One of the best games played as a little kid. Seriously. I loved Red Rover, and I still do. I don’t remember the last time I played, though.
  7. Trivial Pursuit: This is a game to be avoided in my family. My father can take us all on single-handedly.
  8. Risk: A fun, albeit long, board game of world domination. I like having Australia (and/or South America) as my base of operations. Once, hubby’s brother spent quite some time rolling the dice over and over again to see if they were weighted incorrectly. ::sigh::
  9. Poker: I’m not good at poker. However, in high school, our youth group would sometimes have poker parties where we played with M&Ms. Fun times, even if I was quite bad. I don’t bluff well.
  10. Scrabble: Another major family game. My parents are both quite good, and the title of family champion goes back and forth between them every now and then. Sister and I can compete with them nowadays though, so it can be quite intense if we all get together for a family scrabble tourney. Games take a long time in my family though - Mother requires a lot of time. “I know there’s a seven-letter word in here somewhere!”
  11. Solitaire: I love card games, and know and play many different versions of solitaire. Sometimes you just need a mindless card game to relax.
  12. Four-Square: Another childhood favorite. Fun to play at camp or on the playground, and you can make up fun and interesting new rules. It’d take me awhile to get back into the swing of it, I think, but I have fond memories.
  13. Inner Tube Water Polo: The newest one on the list, I just started a few weeks ago. It’s fun, and for those of us who aren’t in shape, still some good exercise. Our team went undefeated* in the regular season, and we have playoffs in the next week or so.

*Okay, so there were only three regular season games, one team flat out didn’t show up, and one game we were playing 7 (plus 2 subs) vs. 4, but still. Undefeated!

Tuesday Morning Update

Here’s another quick Tuesday Update:

  • We won our inner tube water polo game last week. I even scored a goal! To be fair, much of their team didn’t show up, so we were playing 7 (plus 2 subs) vs. 4, so it’s not exactly fair. Game ended under the mercy rule. I wonder if our opponents tonight will show up.
  • That pound I “lost” last week? Yeah, it came back. Not terribly surprising, but still disappointing. My eating habits started out well last week, but they deteriorated towards the weekend, culminating in a birthday party on Saturday and some tasty pizza I didn’t need on Sunday. Ah well. I’m in it for the long haul, and this is only a minor setback. I just need to focus a little more.
  • The weather this morning is miserable. Rain that is turning into a frozen slushie all along the sidewalk. Where’d the sun go?
  • I have a lot of blog posts that I mean to write, but I’m not much in the mood for writing much right now. I spent the weekend writing (wait, mostly procrastinating) for something else, so I’m a little burnt out on it for now. Fear not, I won’t abandon you, though!

100 Strangers Project: Lori

13 March 2008

After taking Anne’s pictures, I headed over to the area in front of Bar Louie. The lighting was beautiful, so I took a few shots of the area and waited for the right subject. Lori soon walked up behind me and asked what I was taking pictures of. “No one yet,” I replied, and invited her to get in front of the camera. She readily agreed, although she had to grab her bike and put on some lip gloss first. She is apparently a multi-talented lady - playing mandolin, keyboard, drums, and many other artistic/creative things I can’t quite remember. She easily kept up a stream of dialogue, telling me that she used to be a model when she was younger, about a photographer friend of hers, about her new cellphone, about how she’s given up alcohol (mostly), etc. Definitely an interesting character. She pulled all sorts of poses in front of the camera, and seemed to have a lot of fun with it. It was certainly an experience.

100 Strangers Project: Anne

13 March 2008

Thursday was an absolutely beautiful day, so I walked in circles for awhile trying to find my courage and a stranger. In Nickels Arcade, I saw this woman approaching with orange sunglasses atop her head, so I asked her to help me with my project, and she agreed. Anne is an English major here, and when she graduates in April, she plans on going to work for the democratic campaign. Sounds exciting!

The data clearly indicate…

According to my preliminary observations, the current 24-hour period is Talk Like a Physicist Day! The day coincides with the anniversary of the birth of one Albert Einstein, as well as the day on which we celebrate the transcental number π. Under the assumption that I am not a physicist, it would be necessary to use a perturbative approach to alter my speech patterns to more closely match that of other physicists. However, that assumption is only valid for cryogenic temperatures, and it breaks down under typical laboratory conditions.

On a side note, the ambient temperature lately has been orders of magnitude warmer (on an arbitrary temperature scale), and the average amount of solar radiation penetrating the atmosphere to reach the surface has increased in statiscally significant quantities. These effects jointly combine to improve the author’s temperment. Of course, the data could be compromised by the increased concentrations of caffeine in the author’s bloodstream. This effect, however, is beyond the scope of this blog entry and will be discussed in future work.
